Wainwright Retired Teachers’ Association

 Help & Information

Tips For Use of this Site

The web site is divided into three sections, each with their own distinctive picture in the banner, along with the applicable heading:

  1. The main site reads “Wainwright Retired Teachers’ Association.” The background image is colorized sage green. All the main pages are linked through navigation on these pages.
  2. Our feature content is the book, “Little Schools in the Parkland.” The presentation version appears with a color photo in the banner background. These pages are intended for normal use. It is okay to link to these pages, though we would prefer you include a link to our Home page, as well.
  3. The third section is intended for reference purposes, only. It is a facsimile version which corresponds directly with the print version of the book, albeit with added line numbers. The banner image is colorized sage green for easy recognition. We ask that no inbound links be directed to these pages since they very nearly duplicate the main content, and we do not wish to have them indexed by search engines.

Banner Links

  • The main site banner acts as a link to the Home page on all pages.
  • The color photo banner in Little Schools in the Parkland links to the Table of Contents.
  • In the Reference section, the colorized banner links to the Reference Index.

How to Reach this Page

This page, Help & Information, may be reached from anywhere in the site by either the [?] button in the main navigation, or by use of the text Help link located in the navigation lower in the page. Both are indicated by the Help cursor that appears when hovering on the link. The [?] button on this page acts as a Back Button if Javascript is enabled, returning you to the previous page, otherwise it links to the start of the page.

Active Pages

When you land on pages which are linked from the main navigation, their corresponding link on that page will display a tooltip reading Active Page. Their text will appear in red small caps as a visual cue. Active Page links are indicated by your system default cursor, which is usually an arrow, rather than a hand pointer. Typically, these links are still functional, but link to the start of the page.

Contents, Authors and Index Links

All Little Schools in the Parkland pages contain a link to the Table of Contents, as indicated by the Contents button. The Authors button links to an alphabetical Index of Authors and Contributors. This index contains links to both the presentation pages, by title, and the reference facsimile pages, by page number. Finally, the Index link directs you to an alphabetical listing of all the stories, by title. Like the Authors page, the title link points to the full version of the story, while the page number links open in the facsimile version with line numbers. Linking to any of these index pages is okay, though we would prefer that you didn’t.

The Reference Link

A special case exists where the same button behaves in two ways, depending upon where it appears. This is the Reference button that appears in all main navigation of the Little Schools in the Parkland portion of the site. When you are in main or section index pages, this link points to the Reference Index. In the story presentation pages, the link will direct you to the facsimile page for the story you have open. The Return button directs you back to the full page. The Reference button in a facsimile page points to the Reference Index.

Current Section Link

Little Schools in the Parkland is divided into seven sections, each with their own index page. The sections correspond with their respective subdivision, including Town Schools, with the addition of Afterwords, the Reminiscences section. The main navigation in each open story contains a link to the section index, indicated by the Active Page style highlighting of the button, usually found next to the Contents button, and described by the words, Towns, One, Two, through Five. Upon hovering the tooltip reads Current Section Index with a hand cursor.

Looping Through Related Stories

Within the sections, there is Previous and Next navigation. This serves to jump forward or backward through the section pages in a continuous loop. Sandwiched between these are buttons related to the open page, typically Reference and Photo.

Since both the Reference and Photo series of pages contain similar navigation looping, the Return button will direct you to the story page corresponding to the page from which you return.

Why Is this Site Labelled? ICCS™ seal

It goes without saying that as teachers, we would do nothing less than teach, or support teaching, in its purest form. Our content is intended for readers of all ages, and as such is purposely registered, certified and labelled according to the requirements of the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA) and ChildSafe International along with its subsidiary organization iWatchdog. We chose this method of labelling because we support the aims and objectives of these organizations: protection of our privacy and a safer internet for our children, and one supposes in our case, grandchildren.

The measures described above enable our content to pass through parental control filters, and other content control filters in use in schools and libraries. We have done this to ensure that the stories we tell reach their intended audience, knowledge seeking youth, and to be sure that the rest of us can read them too.

We will be happy to discuss any concerns you have with respect to content or privacy, please contact us directly, or direct your concerns to one of our members.

 Our Chosen Typefaces

For their ready cursability, and for their excellent scaling qualities, the chosen typefaces for this site are, Berling Antiqua for the serif letter characters in typical level one and level two headings, and Lucida Sans Unicode in typical sans-serif type, which dominates the site. The defined alternative serif fonts are Palatino Linotype, Times New Roman and Times. The alternative sans-serif fonts are Arial and Helvetica.

Berling Antiqua is not typically included with your operating system, but it does come bundled with Microsoft Reader, a free electronic reading application available for download from Microsoft.

The typefaces are easily scalable (adjustable in size) by the various methods available within your operating system, input devices and browser. On most systems the text size can be adjusted from the View menu (View > Text Size), or by depressing the CTRL key while rotating the wheel on your pointing device or keyboard.

Most computers possess the means that will enable you to view this site in whichever way you would prefer. We have endeavored to make our site cooperate with your system so as to offer the greatest flexibility for you, the user, and to further ensure that your ability to view it is not undermined in any way. If you experience problems reading any material contained on this web site, regarding your concerns.

 Little School Images

The little school images relate directly to Subdivision No.4 schools, but reflect appropriately the full range of early rural schools throughout the region that would eventually become Wainwright School Division No. 32, and thus adequately portray the theme of our feature story, “ Little Schools in the Parkland.”

The original sketches were prepared for a reunion some years ago by a local artist whose identity is as yet unknown to us, and were subsequently handed down to the Edgerton District Museum where they were photographed by Erika Foley. We have adapted the images used on this site from those photos, and as they are not intended as true reproductions, they bear very little resemblence to the originals.

If you can help us in determining the origin and artist of these pictures, please contact us directly, or pass the information along to one of our members.

 Our Banner Images

Our main banner image is adapted from a photo of Denwood, taken in about 1906 or 1907. The photographer is unknown, but it may have been J.H. Gano, who was appointed around the same time to chronicle in pictures the development of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway as it advanced through the Battle River region.

The banner photo in our Little Schools in the Parkland section is a view from Sligo School, around mid-July, looking south. The photo is by our developer, RC Pierce.

 Linking to This Site

Links to this web site are encouraged, especially those that link to our Home page or the main index page of the section of interest. Please do not link to any pages in the Reference folder as these are alternate content, and very nearly duplicate pages in the site’s main feature, Little Schools in the Parkland.

We would appreciate knowing about your link so please send an e-mail with the URL to your site for us to pass along to our members and visitors.
