EDUCATION POINT SCHOOL DISTRICT No.2849

  1. Education Point school District Number 2849 was organized early in the
  2. spring of 1914 with Colin McLean as chairman, Frank Johnstone as
  3. secretary and John McNaughton on the board. During the summer the
  4. building was erected on the NE ¼ 1-47-9 W4 by Robert Harper and W.E.
  5. (Longboat) Walker. The building was opened with a dance in late August
  6. and classes commenced in September with Mr. Edward Costain as teacher.
  7.
  8. Twelve pupils were required in order to open a school so the three
  9. Renwick children were included although their home was outside the new
  10. district. No records are available, but from memory the first pupils were
  11. Herbert and Helen Larson; Dorothy Johnstone and her cousin Madeline
  12. Fischer; Lloyd, Dorothy and Gladys Renwick; Sherman and Freeman Prosser,
  13. Clarkson and Gordon Ambler; Howard Merry and James Craig.
  14.
  15. Mr. Costain taught until 1917. The following were some of the first
  16. teachers: Mrs. R. Patterson, Miss Johnstone, who succumbed to the dreaded
  17. flu, Miss Hopegood, Miss Kinepp, Miss Bramley-Moore and Mr. Rice.
  18.
  19. By the summer of 1922 the board decided to hire a male teacher for better
  20. discipline. Mr. MacIntosh was engaged and successfully handled the school
  21. until 1928. Following him were Miss Hazel Congdon, Miss Anne MacDonald,
  22. Mr. Hodgkinson, Mr. Max Saville, Miss Verna Robertson, Mr. Art Larson, Miss
  23. Gerda Rosen, Mrs. Louisa Prosser, Mr. Davies, Mr. Jack Stead, Miss Jean
  24. Cockroft, Miss Norma McCulloch and Mrs. Alma Enger.
  25.
  26. It appears the name Education Point was suggested by Mr. Johnstone, who
  27. had lived near a school by that name in Manitoba. Apparently no one had a
  28. better suggestion, thus the new district acquired its name.
  29.
  30. Following are the names of men who served as trustees at Education Point:
  31. Wellington Prosser, Chester Brown, James and William Elliot, Reuben
  32. Patterson, Clarence Costain, David and James Craig, Frank Johnstone, John
  33. McNaughton, David Currie and Colin McLean. Colin McLean served as
  34. trustee for twenty-one years. When the Wainwright School Division was
  35. formed David Currie went to Wainwright to be their secretary and Colin
  36. McLean was elected as trustee to the Wainwright School Division Board.
  37.
  38. Education Point school closed in 1956 and the children were bussed to
  39. Albert Centralized School until 1969 when it was closed and all students
  40. were bussed directly to Irma. When this happened the building was sold to
  41. Bill Guy. He moved the building to Irma where it now stands as a fine
  42. home.
  43.
  44. Some of the pupils who attended Education Point during the last few years
  45. it was in operation were: Don Lukens; Yvonne, Carol and Arnold Brown; Ken,
  46. Don, Bob, Alice, Carol and Gordon Fischer; Clara, Lou, Tuffy, Ronnie,
  47. Laverne, Glen and Wayne Larson; Maxine Clisdell; Evelyn, Edgar and Nina
  48. Herder; Clark Smith; and Bill, Yvonne and Clark Blanchard.
