Little Schools in the Parkland

GLENHOLM SCHOOL DISTRICT No.2430

  1. The compilation of this history was greatly facilitated by the writer
  2. having access to the Minute Book of the Glenholm School District, which
  3. included all the minutes from 1911 to 1938. The two names appearing
  4. most often in the book were Mr. Joe Gulbraa and Mr. O. Steffenson who held
  5. the offices of chairman and secretary-treasurer, respectively, for many,
  6. many years. Thanks were extended to Mr. And Mrs. Gulbraa for the help they
  7. were able to give and to Mr. O. Steffenson for making the minute book
  8. available.
  9.
  10. The first board meeting was held on May 15, 1911. Trustees were Messrs.
  11. W.M. Riley, W. Eaton and John Gulbraa. First secretary-treasurer was Mr.
  12. W. Bannister. Other trustees and ratepayers names appearing before 1925
  13. were Messrs. W.H. Harper, Charles Reed, Joe Gulbraa, Wm. Reed, Cliff
  14. McKay, J.A. McDonald, O. Steffenson, C.J. Young, M. Knudson, A.A. Campbell
  15. and P. Harvey.
  16.
  17. The minutes of Jan. 19, 1917 states, “the resolution was made that the
  18. trustees choose a site for the Glenholm School and submit same to the
  19. Dept. for approval.” The site chosen was on a hill on a piece of the SW ¼
  20. 16-45-9 purchased from Mr. Joe Gulbraa.
  21.
  22. At a meeting on Feb. 26, 1920 it was moved that tender by Sawyer and
  23. Askin for construction of the school be accepted. May, 1920 records that
  24. insurance was taken out on the building and by September it was
  25. apparently ready to perform its function.
  26.
  27. It is rather interesting to note that on November 12 of the same year “it
  28. was moved that the teacher’s resignation be accepted and salary paid for
  29. three months.” On January 15, 1921 there was a motion “that a teacher be
  30. engaged as soon as weather more favorable.”
  31.
  32. As far as could be ascertained the teachers before 1935 were Mrs.
  33. McPherson, Mrs. Christenson, Miss E. Kendal, Miss C. McFarlane, Miss
  34. Skogheim, Miss Jobb, Miss Townsend, Miss G. Murdock and Miss M.
  35. McFadgeion. In January 1930 the trustees considered 47 applications from
  36. teachers before making their choice.
  37.
  38. Teachers since 1935 have been Miss I. Egedahl, (Mrs. N. Fluebog), Miss M.
  39. Kjos (Mrs. C. Smallwood), Mrs. Doris Likness, Miss M. Burpee, Mrs.
  40. Rodevoldt, Mrs. McLean, Miss M. Shotts (Mrs. Clifford), supervisor Miss
  41. Muriel Hill (Mrs. I. Thurston), teachers: Miss Darkes, Mrs. Ella McRoberts
  42. and Mrs. Louisa Prosser.
  43.
  44. A few other interesting things gleaned from the minutes Jan. 10, 1931 –
  45. C. Jackman moved and J. Gulbraa seconded that our school join with the
  46. other schools for having a school fair in Irma this fall. July, 1938 – the
  47. school inspector, Mr. Goode, gave an outline of how the new larger school
  48. divisions would operate.
  49.
  50. Glenholm School continued to function after many of the surrounding
  51. schools were closed. Finally in 1952, it, too, was closed and the pupils
  52. taken by bus to Irma. The teacher for the last two years that the school
  53. was in operation, Mrs. L. Prosser, requested that her grade four room in
  54. Irma be named Glenholm to keep alive the memory of this district.
  55.
  56. The Glenholm School building was purchased by Mrs. Herbert and son Lloyd,
  57. in 1959 and moved to their farm northwest of Irma where they
  58. remodeled it for a dwelling. They had been living in it only a very short
  59. time when it met the fate of being almost completely destroyed by fire on
  60. April 16, 1960.
  61.
  62. Some of the former Glenholm students who are still living in the district
  63. or nearby are Berge, Knute and Carl Gulbraa, Solvveig Raasok, Nan Larson,
  64. Charles Reed, Glen Hockett, Lily Erickson, Arthur Pedel, Francis Withall,
  65. Wareen and Nathan Fuder.
