Little Schools in the Parkland

ASCOT SCHOOL DISTRICT No.2952

  1. The following information was taken from “Buffalo Trails and Tales.”
  2. With the approval of the Department of Education in 1913 a school district
  3. was formed and the site chosen was the NE ¼ 5-44-6 W4. This site was
  4. four miles south of Wainwright on the Airport Road. Once the site was
  5. approved some $1800 was borrowed to build the school and outhouses,
  6. drill a well, and fence the property. The school district comprising some
  7. sixteen sections was called Ascot after the Ascot Race Track of England
  8. and was numbered 2952.

  10. The first trustees were Harry Clipston, John Alexander, Frank Ebbern and
  11. Angus McQuaker.

  13. The first teacher was a Miss Rhoda Russell, daughter of the first
  14. Presbyterian Minister in Wainwright. Some other teachers were Addie
  15. Culley, Miss Cain, Dr. Aykroyd, Miss Schaffer, Fred Aykroyd, Miss McCarthy
  16. (1928), Miss Ethel Smith (married Art Siddens), Miss Poulson, Agnes
  17. Nickolson (taught 7 years without missing a day), Josephine Middlemas,
  18. Marie (Perkins) Valleau (Sept – Dec 1941) and Ethel Luciow.

  20. In 1928, Inspector W.H. Edwards became an official trustee. The school
  21. district was absorbed by the Wainwright School Division and the children
  22. of the district were bussed to Wainwright.

  24. In 1952, Jim Robinson bought the school building and moved it to
  25. Wainwright. Now it is the home of Mary Goodwin and is situated on the 4th
  26. Avenue and 9th Street.

  28. Some of the early residents of the district whose children attended school
  29. at Ascot were: McQuakers, Alexanders, Haywoods, Lindseths.

  31. Pupils included:
  32. 1919 – Amy, Robert and Alex Alexander; Wallace Wheaton; Alex and Andy
  33. Hutchinson.
  34. In following years some of the pupils were *Olive Alexander and later his
  35. sons Henry and Glen and *Bob, Elsie and Lily Haywood; Jack, Margaret and
  36. Mary McQuaker, Gertrude, *Mary, Grace, Ella, Pat, *Ruth, and Joe Ebbern;
  37. Phyllis and *John Huxley; Bob, Freddie and Jimmy Wilson; Agnes and Mable
  38. Rinas; Bernice and Billy Moore; Vivian Tovel; Helen, Bertha, and Ernest
  39. Lindseth; Harold McCarthy; *Andy, Stella, Josephine, *Betty and Victor
  40. Musak; Margaret, Tom, *Albert and Russell Rodgers; Morice and Donald
  41. Luciow.
