Roseberry School District No. 1743
Roseberry school was built on the NE ¼ 10-46-8 W4 by Christopher
Creamer in 1908. Nobody seems to know why it was called Roseberry.
Miss Ida Milburn was the first teacher, and she boarded with the W.B.
Steele family. The first students were Marjorie, Bessie, Ina, Keith and
Clarke Steele; Isaac Lena and Bessie Hersey; Allan and Leslie Lennon;
Nora, May and Oren Santee. Trustees W. B. Steele, J. Lennon and Isaac
Hersey were members of the first board. Mrs. Moore, Miss Margaret Clark,
Miss Prudence Smith and Miss Armstrong were early teachers.
Because of a shortage of pupils the school had to close from 1914-18. When it reopened Miss Wortman was the teacher and the pupils were: York, Olive and Oliver Rush; Clara, Sam and Edith Ulick and Howard Oldham. The School Board was made up of J.G. Clark, Pete Harvey and Ben Oldham. For a couple of years after the school reopened, holidays were taken in January and February instead of midsummer. Other teachers at Roseberry were Miss Armstrong and Miss Margaret Clark who taught before the school was closed and again after it reopened, a period of fourteen years. Miss D. Kennedy, Miss Hamilton, Miss A. McDonald, Miss H. Ballentine, Miss A. Carmichael, Miss O. Fischer, Miss J. Gray, Miss M. Hess, Miss B. Bruhaug, Mr. L. McClay, Mr. H. Lewin, Mrs. Doris Fenton, Miss Law, Miss Beer, Miss N. Funk, and Miss Steffenson were later teachers.
Mr. A.A. Taylor, Mr. W. Walker, Mrs. B. Oldham, Mr. A. Atkinson, and Mr. C. Younker served as trustees, as well as Bill Lawson and Gerald Allen later on. Roseberry closed in 1948 and the students were bussed to Irma. Church services were held in the school for many years. After the school was closed, the community purchased the building to use as a hall. It was struck by lightning in 1984 and burned to the ground.
