Battle Heights School District No. 3090
Battle Heights School opened in 1914. The name is supposed to have been
derived from the heights of the Battle River, which are one and a half
miles east of the school. It was built on the NW corner of the NW ¼ 33-
45-7 W4. It was a one-roomed school, in which grades one to nine were
taught. There were as many as thirty-six children attending at one time.
The school was the social centre of the community. Card parties were held, with dances following, every three weeks all winter.
After the Wainwright School Division was formed, the school building was sold to Mr. Ted Thurston. It was converted into a comfortable home where he and his wife Molly raised their family and still reside. The school barn was sold to Gordon Elliot. John Newton now owns the land.
A dance was held in the school the day before it was sold. To bring the evening to a close, everybody joined hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne,” bringing to an end an important era in the history of the community.
