Silver Lane School District No. 2364
At a meeting held at the home of James Bronson, on February 11, 1911, it
was decided to construct a school on the southwest corner of the NW ¼
9-44-9 W4. The first officers of the school board were G.R. Bronson as
Chairman and E.G. Stokes as Secretary-Treasurer. The school was built in
1912 at a cost of $800 and was ready for use in July of that year. All the
pupils composing the first class had the surname “Bronson” and for that
reason the school which was built on Bronson land was called Bronson
School. In 1921, by popular vote, the school was renamed Silver Lane.
The first teacher, Mr. R.R. Miller, taught for two months. He was succeeded by Miss E. Latimer who also served a short time. Other teachers for the period 1912-1920 included: Mrs. E.A. Quittenton, Mr. C.M. Scarborough, Mr. J. Fern Trussler, Miss McAllister, Mr. Russell McIllbraith and Mrs. Green.
Under the guidance of Mr. J.B. Horn, who taught in 1921-22, a literary society was formed. Parents and pupils gave the society their wholehearted support and many enjoyable plays were presented for the entertainment of the community.
Other teachers for the period from 1923-1944 included: Mrs. Pitblado, Mrs. McPherson, Mrs. Charles E. Purdy, Mrs. F. McDonnell, Mrs. M. Christensen, Mr. P.M. Hunter, Mr. O.E. McNeill, Mr. A.I. McLean, Mrs. A. Hughes, Miss Lula P. Faulds, Miss L.M. Sanders, Miss Myrtle Johnson, Miss E. Ingram, Miss Myrtle Burpee, Miss Marian Carrington and the last teacher was Miss Marguerite Miller. The school closed in 1944 and the pupils were transferred to Fullview School. In the mid-forties there was a possibility that the school would be reopened, but after some consideration, it was decided that Silver Lane pupils would be transported to Irma by bus. This bus route, under the direction of Mr. Symington, was the first in the Irma district.
Later members of the school board included James Ray, Roy Bronson, James Bell, Charles Ryley, Mrs. Quittenton and Mr. Richmond. Mr. Richmond is to be remembered for his keen interest in all school activities and assistance rendered on many occasions by transporting pupils to school fairs and other events.
For the years the teachers boarded with Mr. And Mrs. James Bronson and later with the Roy Bronsons. After the closing of Silver Lane School, the building was sold to George King. He moved it half a mile south and made it into a very comfortable home. Merle and Ida King and family live there now.
