It has been a good year for the organization. We held four scheduled meetings and had guests in attendance at three of them. Our usual turnout is anywhere from 9 or so to 17. A few more of our members are residing in the Lodge and it is nice to see them still coming out for these gatherings.
We still look after the concession at two of the monthly Farmers’ Markets held at the Prairie Rose Centre. The revenue from this helps us with our internet fees and stamps, etc. Retired teachers make sandwiches and pies, and we also sell coffee, tea and juice to the vendors and visitors.
The same executive continues to be voted in year after year. No one wants to take on any of the positions, but I am hoping that with a few new retirees, I will soon be able to just sits back and attend the meetings, instead of organizing them. Eva Ho, secretary; Allan Ford, treasurer; and myself as president appreciate the attendance of the regulars at Grace United Church hall four times a year.
This past September we held our third To Hell With the Bell breakfast at St. Thomas Anglican Church hall, and had 25 show up for this event. All enjoyed the good food prepared by Allan Ford, George Bunz and Dave Whaley. A few of the retired teachers, summer residents who stay at Clear Lake for the holidays, joined us again, and it was a good time for visiting. Each teacher told about their day of their first year of teaching, and it was so interesting to hear of those who taught in the 30’s and 40’s; how they had to go early to start the fire, and how they had to walk four miles across fields to reach the country schools. How times have changed.
We counted this gathering as our first meeting, and met again at our Christmas gathering in December. Every member brings a wrapped gift for the Christmas Wish program, and food items for the food bank.
